There may be many reasons why pain and decreased functional activities persists. One of the common problems is a build-up of scar tissue in the body. Scar tissue is the result of soft tissue healing from stress, micro/macro tearing and muscle weakness, much like a scar will appear on your skin after a cut. Scar tissue leads to chronic muscle pain, decreased flexibility, muscle "knots" that do not go away with rest or massage, and muscle weakness.

Most of the everyday scar tissue build-up accumulates in the soft tissue of the fascia. Fascia is tissue designed to decrease friction of sliding muscles and creates compartments of different muscle groups and layers. It is essential for normal tissue function. An excess of built-up scar tissue results in abnormal mechanics of the internal muscular system when often leads to pain, headaches, muscle tightness
